Although a few of the women had finished the race in under twelve seconds earlier in the day, by now everyone was exhausted and running much slower. When Louise lunged for the tape at the finish line, it fluttered to the ground an instant before she reached it. She had not won, but she knew she had been very close to first place. In fact, she had tied for third place. But Tidye Pickett did not run quite so well. Although she tried her best, she finished last, in seventh place. When the results were announced, Tidye was crushed.

In the weeks before Trudy was scheduled to make her attempt, she and Meg had some work to do. During her first attempt, Trudy had been bothered by both her swimsuit and her goggles. Her one-piece swimsuit had irritated her skin and slowed her down, and her goggles had leaked badly. Now, she and Meg started experimenting. To keep the suit from irritating her skin, they cut a silk one-piece suit into two pieces, a top and a bottom. Trudy found the new suit far more comfortable. She and her sister did not realize it, but they had just invented the first bikini.

Instantly, everyone stopped talking. Even though the waves were approaching six feet, rain was pouring down, and the wind was blowing nearly thirty miles an hour, the only person not bothered by the bad weather was Trudy. Why should she stop? ” indeed. No one had an answer to her question, and Trudy soon rolled back onto her belly and started swimming again. The captain went back to the pilothouse, Bill Burgess stayed quiet, and Trudy’s father and sister shared a knowing look. Ever so slowly, stroke by stroke, over the next few hours, Trudy swam the crawl toward England.
