For this purpose we used a cation-exchange column for the first time in the heavy element region. It had been shown that ion ex change chromatography was eminently suitable for separating the rare-earth elements—elements whose chemical properties were so similar that it was difficult to use ordinary aqueous chemical methods. Seaborg's actinide hypothesis suggested that this method should be equally applicable to the new rare-earthlike series of (III) elements.
