The doctors were able to keep it at bay for several years with some medicines. Everything seemed OK again. Then it started spreading and they began radiation. It was just terrible. My childhood hero was wasting away. His powerful hands and big, strong arms had dwindled down to nothing. He was tired all the time; he had no energy left. But he still had a positive outlook on life, and I was delighted when he agreed to take me deer hunting. We walked quite a way through the woods along the creek but did not see anything.
His days were numbered. He knew it, and I was beginning to realize it. This was to be his last deer hunt; I am sure he knew it, and deep down inside somewhere I probably knew that too. Finn and Harald before their last hunt in November 1999. Some days were better than others; this was one of his good days. We got my deer rifle down from where he’d stored it in the attic, cleaned it off, and wiped oil out of the barrel with a fresh cleaning patch. Finn began writing, and he soon got an exclusive contract to write for the National Rifle Association publications, and later became a field editor for Wolfe Publishing.
